MIKEL VAN GELDEREN APT (1986 -) (hc-L4 / E-side S - 2 bays) [recorded 1993 / 2008]

Mikel, with Radboud, Ger and Gaston, divided Hartcamp's level-5 in 1986. During its construction between Feb and Dec 86 Mikel lived in the Bilderdijk building. At first he occupied only the north bay of the new living-space, its south bay was reserved as the enclave's shared space but it was hardly used; in 1988 he moved his kitchen into its photographic dark-room portion (which it still occupies) - and in 1990 he acquired the whole south bay which he used as his painting studio until 2005 when the entire two-bay living space was redeveloped as a domestic apartment.

At this time Mikel occupied 2 adjoining bays - this N-bay was domestic, the S-bay (entered through the door pic-left) was his painting studio.

MIKEL APT (in 4-2008)  ... in process

In 2005 Mikel redesigned and renovated his whole apartment as a domestic space, added a private bathroom/wc and removed his art working to a shared studio in Merkelbach. The work took about 7 months.

NOTE: Whole height = 4.2m / main floor raised 0.2m.  Support for N-Mezz's 'hanging back' came from Bührmann.

Gaston, with Radboud, Ger and Mikel, divided Hartcamp's level-5 in 1986. From 86 to 95 Gaston occupied only the single north bay (with mezzanine), using it only as a studio and living outside Tetterode; he also rented a space in the Merkelbach basement [Ref: Work-Places] as a store and dark-room. In 1995 he acquired the second (south) bay and in about 6 weeks of work (with some assistance) established the main features of the present apt; work on this continued "on and off" for about 6 months. In 1999 the whole family moved into this living-space.

This three person family home is very precisely fitted into a relatively small two-bay space. Its main floor area is 59m² plus two mezzanines (which extend over the enclave corridor) of 31m² - a total area of 90m².

NOTE: Wood "beams" (joists?) are mostly new, some 2nd hand.[ - add info on sources of structure and fittings].
