NOTE 8 TETTERODE'S PAINTED LIFT (DACOSTAKADE'S CENTRAL LIFT) (PAINTED 2006) - (pics 2008) Riding the Dacostacade block's cavernous room-sized
goods-lift -
previously a
sombre dark blood-red - has been transformed into an entertainment by a
narrative strip of painting on the wall of doors and floor-edges that faces us as
we trundle up and down. At
its top level [L5] we enter the lift through an arch of palms. Beneath this
tropic isle's edge we plunge six levels, 23.5 metres of increasingly deep
dark and grotesque ocean, until in the subterranean basement (Kelder) a giant
jellyfish hovers in the dark.
The
painting is indicative of the increasing role of the young in the Collective's
manifestations. It was the work of six or so
("maybe some more in the end") young people between 9 and 17 years
old.
A
Tetterode adult told me:
"They made the paintings
in 2006 for the party and exhibition that was
organised for the celebration of the 25th birthday of Tetterode. There were no adults involved, in fact, as we were setting up the
exhibition, we had to use, of course, the elevator for bringing materials down
into the gallery-space (which was used to show a huge maquette of our building).
The children were presumed to start with their painting two or three weeks
before the opening of that exhibition, but three days before the opening they
were only half way. So they occupied the elevator during those last three days
and we, as adults, could not use it anymore and we had (all of us) to use the
stairs instead.
The
children were in the elevator those last three days, accompanied by lamps and
music, until late at night. I guess that there were some nights in which they
did not come home at all. It was a funny situation: we could hear the music and
we saw some movements behind the round windows of the elevator, while we as
adults were all busy with heavy pieces of wood and other materials, dragging
them down the staircase."

photographed, but the links between these lift-stops are mainly frames from low-res
video (I did not dare to attempt to stop the lift between floors).]
