L3 ENCLAVE PASSAGE

(pic 23-04-2008 / to NNW)

Four days before all the other pictures (a unique foray into a normally locked enclave!) - things move at different rates: for instance in the next pic the scaffold unit has changed sides but the cardboard box outside Ronald's door is unmoved.

L3 ENCLAVE PASSAGE

(pic 27-04-2008 / to SSE)
Almost at the passage's N end, next to Ina's studio door, we look south down the length - past Ronald T's left and right in-progress apt, past the projection of Jan's apt - to the enclave's entry door.

I
n 2008 the enclave passage's progress north terminates at the south wall (and entry door) of Akke B's living-space. Here it sends a narrow branch to the left (west) and becomes a fire-escape passage between Ronald's and Akke's apts. Before the present rearrangement of the apts this passage separated the two parts of Ronald's: his studio and his living-space.

JAN APT (in 2008)    ... in process

This in-process family apartment was recorded during a phase of smaller scale fitting and clarifying after radical planning and completion of certain large construction works. In the midst of this partially completed apartment there are isolated finished structures and arrangements that demonstrate Jan's formal idealism: the exquisite south-end store-unit, the mezzanine steelwork, the spatial plan, even the precise improvisatory conjoining of the 'saucepan-tables'. However this degree of clarity-distillation can never include and facilitate all domestic needs/activities/potentials; indeed some is designed to hide them. Visible here are the opening moves of a game of finding and completing forms that monumentalise the order of spaces, and are simultaneously arrangements that serve (and inevitably average) the needs of the inhabitants. At present these include items brought in from some previous domesticity: tall wooden cupboards group with a new steel mezzanine-leg to divide apt-entry / kitchen / sitting; the need for a larger kitchen table has subtly mated two disparate tables. The moving adapting game of use and the need for resolved finished forms of beauty are sometimes parallel, sometimes accordant, and sometimes oppositional - the ongoing realisation of this apartment involves and provokes this extending drama.

AKKE BOTMA APT & STUDIO (1990 --) [mb-L3 / E-side N-end]  [recorded 1993]

Akke established a board-wall-defined territory in Merkelbach in 1981/82. The family apt shown below (and its studio) were started in 1990.

AKKE B APT (& STUDIO)

(pic 8-93 / to WWS)

A 'family home' and studio.

The whole living-space is divided into apartment and studio. The studio is through the double-door in the S-wall [pic left]. The entry from the enclave passage is via the studio.

The apt space occupies the NE corner of Merkelbach and thus has windows on two sides (pic right: note the high strip-windows of Merkelbach's N facade).

A mezzanine bedroom is over the Kitchen.

The enclave corridor is encased in the white walls and mezzanine floor along the east side of the space. The portion of mezzanine south of the half-demolished centre wall serves as access to a small windowless room - a 15m2 portion of Jan van G's office bay.
